How To Take Sertraline (Zoloft – Daxid) 100 mg Tablet

This medicine may be taken with or without food. Try to take it at the same time every day.

Sertraline is available as a tablet or oral solution.

Sertraline must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed otherwise, as stopping it suddenly could worsen your condition.

Take Sertraline exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage of Sertraline (Zoloft – Daxid) 100 mg Tablet

Depression: Initial: 50 mg once daily, may be increased, if necessary, in increments of 50 mg at intervals of at least 1 week. Maximum: 200 mg/day. Treatment duration: At least 6 months. 

Obsessive compulsive disorder: Initial: 50 mg once daily, may be increased, if necessary, in increments of 50 mg at intervals of at least 1 week. Maximum: 200 mg/day. 

Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia; Posttraumatic stress disorder; Social anxiety disorder: Initial: 25 mg once daily, increased to 50 mg once daily after 1 week. Subsequent doses may be increased, if necessary, in increments of 50 mg at intervals of at least 1 week. Maximum: 200 mg/day. 

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder: Continuous dosing: Initial: 50 mg once daily, may increase by 50 mg each menstrual cycle if necessary. Maximum: 150 mg/day. Luteal phase dosing: Initial: 50 mg once daily for the 1st 3 days, may increase by 100 mg/day. Maintenance: All doses must be given in lowest effective dose, once optimal response is achieved.

Missed Sertraline (Zoloft – Daxid) 100 mg Tablet

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Somnolence
  • Dizziness
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances 
  • Tachycardia
  • Tremor
  • Agitation
  • QTc prolongation or torsades de pointes
  • Coma

Seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

People taking the following medication should not take Sertraline:

  • Concomitant use or within 14 days of discontinuation of MAOIs
  • Concurrent use with pimozide
  • Concomitant use of sertraline oral concentrate solution with disulfiram

Side Effects of Sertraline (Zoloft – Daxid) 100 mg Tablet

Sertraline may have the following side effects:

  • Activation of hypomania or mania
  • Seizures 
  • CNS depression
  • QTc prolongation 
  • Torsades de pointes
  • Abnormal bleeding events including cutaneous bleeding 
  • Bone fractures
  • Mild pupillary dilation 
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Loss of glycemic control
  • Withdrawal symptoms

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • Linezolid
  • Pimozide
  • Disulfiram
  • Lithium
  • Olanzapine
  • Perphenazine
  • Levomepromazine
  • Sumatriptan
  • Zolmitriptan
  • Phenytoin
  • Carbamazepine
  • Phenobarbital
  • Tolbutamide
  • Glibenclamide
  • Warfarin
  • Ticlopidine
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • St John’s wort

How Does It Work?

Sertraline, a naphthalenamine-derivative antidepressant, which selectively inhibits the reuptake of presynaptic serotonin (5-HT). It has minimal effects on norepinephrine and dopamine neuronal uptake.

Uses 

Sertraline is used to treat the following conditions:

Special Precautions and Connected Warnings

Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:

  • Patients with family history of bipolar disorder
  • Mania or hypomania
  • Schizophrenia
  • Previous seizure disorder or condition predisposing to seizures 
  • Volume depletion
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • History of bleeding disorders 
  • Angle-closure glaucoma or history of glaucoma
  • Risk factors for QTc prolongation
  • Avoid abrupt withdrawal
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Children and elderly
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • CYP2C19 ultrarapid poor metabolizers
  • Avoid alcohol 
  • Excessive consumption of grapefruit juice (more than 3 glasses a day)

Storage Conditions

  • Store between 20-25°C.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
  • Do not use Sertraline that is expired or out of expiry date.
